MONTANA BDR

THIS AUGUST 22 - 29  2026

The Montana Backcountry Discovery Route completes the final connection in the western BDR network, creating a continuous backcountry path across the western United States. Covering approximately 900 miles, the route begins near Island Park, Idaho, travels north through Montana, and ends just south of the Canadian border near Eureka.

Riders cross more than a dozen mountain ranges while exploring the diverse terrain that defines Big Sky Country. The route threads together alpine ridgelines, secluded valleys, dense evergreen forests, historic mining towns, open ranchlands, and long stretches of rugged two-track. Standout areas include the Gravelly Range, Ruby River Valley, Virginia City, Butte, and the remote East Pioneer, Highland, and Cabinet Mountains.

The MTBDR blends scenic gravel roads and flowing forest tracks with optional tougher sections for riders looking to push their skills. The prime riding window typically runs from July through September, depending on snow conditions and seasonal closures.
